Face recognition

Discover a revolutionary new way of embracing your digital content by recognizing people in your assets.

Written by Nazar Krushelnytsky

Pics.io now introduces a new way for sorting your assets by people, organizing and tagging content related to certain individuals, and spending exceptionally less time finding your digital gold by combining the existing search criteria with facial recognition.

We use Amazon Rekognition computer vision service to recognize faces in your library and organize them in the Persons panel.

Facial recognition is in its early stage and works only with JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP, WEBP, and RAW file formats at the moment.

Identify people in photos in your library

The process of face recognition is automatic and only requires you to give a person a name and indicate the specific group of photos or a collection they should be recognized in. When we know the person's name, we will be able to identify one on other photos without your involvement. All you need to do is choose the relevant photo collection(s) and initiate the face recognition process for those files.

To proceed with AI facial recognition:

  1. Select one or several assets containing the faces of people you'd like to recognize and navigate to the Faces widget in the Details panel and click the Recognize button.

To monitor the progress, you can check for the status of the recognition at the top of the Details panel.

To recognize a single photo, the system may take up to 3-7 seconds. If hundreds or thousands of photos are being processed, the process may take up to 15-30 minutes.

NB! If no faces are detected in the selected assets, AI processing assets (previously known as AI credits) will not be consumed or deducted from your balance.

In case the system is not able to recognize a person for some reason, you can point it in the right direction and make it work manually.

To proceed with the manual facial recognition:

  1. Open an asset in the preview mode and locate the Draw face region button within the Faces widget.

  2. Select an area of the person's face and type their name in the Search persons field. Pics.io will suggest you create a new person which can be later used to tag photos.

Once a person in the photo has been identified, you may now use the name to tag other photos in your library by drawing an area of the face and assigning a person to it.

There's a more advanced option to recognize faces with a help of artificial intelligence. Pics.io fully automates the process of recognizing faces in photos by creating the respective selections of photos, in which the face has been identified, and sorting them in the Persons panel. This option significantly better saves time allowing you to recognize faces in one go.

Once the process is finished, Unnamed faces will appear in the Persons panel and will be recognized under the Faces widget in each asset respectively. To rename an Unnamed face, open an asset in preview and click the pencil icon.

Emotions and Facial Features Recognition

Pics.io analyses the emotions of the person in the photo and creates values that are rendered as facial keywords. Consequently, the rendered facial emotions will be assigned as regular keywords to the analyzed photo in the Keywords widget in the Details panel.

You can use these keywords later to find a person with a particular emotion in the photo, e.g.: John AND smiling.

A person's name is recorded as a keyword in an asset's metadata, allowing for more efficient searching and organization of files based on the people involved.

Find photos of a specific person or group of people

By configuring different options for your search, including the brand-new Persons criteria, you may now narrow down the results to reach the highest efficiency of your search. Pics.io allows you to search for created and unnamed faces combined or separately.

Tip: Your repeated searches can be saved for later usage.

Remove a person from a photo

  1. Open an asset in question in the preview mode;

  2. Navigate to the Faces widget in the Details panel and search for the needed person;

  3. Once found, hover over the already recognized desired name and click on it;

  4. Confirm the action to remove the name of a person from the photo.

Unnamed faces and All persons

Unnamed faces are automatically created when recognized by artificial intelligence. Such can be renamed by hovering over it and clicking the Rename person icon. Once a face has been renamed, it will now appear under All persons.

NB! All newly recognized photos with a face of a certain person will be automatically grouped under the name of the person they belong to. This is the main convenience of the feature — once you give a name to a face, all newly recognized faces of that person automatically receive the person's name.

All persons section contains people that were renamed, or created by you or your team member by manual face recognition via the Faces widget.

Pricing

Facial recognition is a paid feature and requires AI assets on your balance, which can be purchased for facial recognition and auto keywording purposes from the Billing page.

Note: AI assets will only be deducted for images that contain faces. If no faces are detected in the images, your balance remains unchanged.

We have recently introduced the AI-Kit Add-on with a new system of calculating, where 1 credit now equals 1 asset that can be processed by AI service.

In order to automatically recognize faces for all assets that will be uploaded to your Pics.io library, tick the Automatically recognize persons for new assets checkbox.

Sort people alphabetically or by time created

Locate a sorting mode button at the end of the search bar in the Peoples panel to sort people in your library by:

  • Name: A-Z, Z-A

  • Create time: Old first, New First

In order to merge different faces of the same person/or different people:

  1. Drag a person's face that you want to be merged and drop it into another that will contain the assets belonging to it.

  2. Confirm the action to merge faces.

Favorite a person

  • Click Add to Favorites to distinguish a person from others and display it in Favorites over the rest of the faces.

Privacy First

We guarantee the privacy of faces recognized by the AI. Neither the Amazon Rekognition service we use nor do we keep any metadata related to facial recognition in any open form in our database as Amazon keeps the data coordinates in hash values. That means no one from Amazon or from our company can ever look up a photo to receive a name or any other related data to it.

Additionally, Amazon does not store or use your data for any training purposes. We prioritize your privacy and ensure that your data is handled securely and only used to provide the face recognition service.
