Generating .HAR file for complex issues troubleshooting

Learn how to help our team to find the source of a problem using your browser logs. How to create .HAR file.

Written by Eugene

When it comes to troubleshooting complex issues, it might be necessary for our customer support team to obtain additional details about the network requests that are being generated in your browser at the moment when an issue takes place.

In such a case, a custom support representative may ask you to record a .HAR file. This is simply a set of network request logs running in the background each time you take any action on a website. These logs will be passed to our Technical team for further analysis.

How can I generate .HAR file?

To generate .HAR file in a browser of your choice, please perform the below-mentioned steps correctly:

Chrome:

  • Open Google Chrome and go to the website page/section where the issue is occurring.

  • Find the 3 Vertical dots button and select More Tools > Developer Tools or use Alt + Cmd/Ctrl + I combination.

  • From the panel opened, select the Network tab.

  • Locate a round red Record button in the upper left corner of the tab, and make sure it is red. In case it is grey, click it once before you start recording.

  • Check the box Preserve logs.

  • Clear out any existing logs from the Network tab by clicking the Clear button next to a round red record button.

  • Reproduce the issue that you were experiencing before by taking exactly the same steps that led to the reported problem, while the network requests are being recorded.

  • Once you have reproduced the issue and get the same result, in Chrome, click the Export HAR button below the Clear button. Then save the file to your computer: Save as HAR with Content

Firefox:

  • Open Firefox and go to the website page/section where the issue is occurring.

  • Find the Firefox menu (three horizontal parallel lines) at the top-right of your browser window and select More tools - Web Developer Tools - Network or use Alt + Cmd/Ctrl + I combination. This will open Developer Network Tools as a docked panel on top of the main Firefox window.

  • Clear out any existing logs from the Network tab by clicking the Trash icon at the top left corner of the docked panel.

  • The recording starts automatically when you start performing actions in the browser.

  • Minimize the panel or switch to the main browser window and reproduce the issue that you were experiencing before by taking exactly the same steps that led to the reported problem, while the network requests are being recorded.

  • Once you have reproduced the issue and you see that all of the actions have been generated in the Developer Network Panel (should just take a few seconds), right-click anywhere under the File column, and click on Save all as Har.

Safari:

  • Open Safari and go to the website page/section where the issue is occurring.

  • Locate the Develop menu at the menu bar and select Show Web Inspector or use Alt + Cmd/Ctrl + I combination:

if you don’t see the Develop menu in the menu bar, choose Safari > Preferences, click Advanced, then select “Show Develop menu in menu bar”.

  • Click the Network tab and clear out any existing logs from the Network tab by clicking the Trash icon at the top right corner of the panel.

  • Without closing the Network tab, reproduce the issue that you were experiencing before by taking exactly the same steps that led to the reported problem, while the network requests are being recorded.

  • Click the Export icon on the far right of the network tab and save the HAR file.

Internet Explorer:

  • Open Internet Explorer and go to the website page/section where the issue is occurring.

  • Press F12 on your keyboard (or click the gear icon > F12 Developer Tools)

  • Click the Network tab and clear out any existing logs from the Network tab by clicking the Trash icon at the top right corner of the panel.

  • Reproduce the issue that you were experiencing before by taking exactly the same steps that led to the reported problem, while the network requests are being recorded.

  • Once done click the Save button.

Give the trace a filename and click the Save button which will save it as a .har file or .xml file.

Once you've successfully generated .HAR file, please send it to support@pics.io so that our Technical team can identify and fix the problem.
